LIVING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Each guestroom’s layout draws inspiration from the modular design of Japanese bento boxes, giving way to clearly defined sections that seamlessly fit together.

It is said that the word “Bento” originated from the Azuchi- Momoyama period and evoloved into a luxury item for the upper class in the early days of modern Japan. Today, bento is no longer seen merely as a portable lunch container, but also a piece of art that is composed by different combinations of colours and shapes from inside and out. Imagine a hotel guestroom’s layout drawing inspiration from the modular design of Japanese bento boxes, you will be surprised by its unique beauty and charm.

Representing a brand-new label under the umbrella of luxury hotel group Palace Hotel Tokyo, Zentis made its debut in Osaka. The 16-storey building situated where the picturesque, riverside area of Dojimahama and the highend business entertainment district of Kita-shinchi meet, with Kansai International Airport and Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport) located less than an hour’s drive away, and the city’s main rail hub just a five-minute ride away.

Valuing design, the Zentis Osaka invited internationally renowned UK designer Tara Bernerd of Tara Bernerd & Partners to lead the interior architecture and design. Nature’s calm colour palette extends throughout the public spaces, with soft, warm tones and textures intermingling with timber beams, exposed brick and structural ironmongery to give a distinctive, industrial-chic look and feel to them.

The central staircase is one of the design statements of the hotel. Carved out of blue limestone, it embraces the Japanese aptitude for space utilization – ingeniously incorporating a bench, a counter and shelves on three of its sides. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the public spaces provides excellent lighting, at the same time, giving a peek at the garden outside, making the guests feel as if they are at an urban oasis.

All hotel suites are situated on the topmost floor, whereas the 212 rooms and suites are spacious and bright. The fresh palette throughout includes the warm, natural shades of light woods paired with pops of color, while brush strokes inspired by the artfulness of Japanese calligraphy draw attention above each bed and add a local touch to each guestroom.

Mr Jun Yasui, General Manager of Zentis Osaka

Each guestroom’s layout draws inspiration from the modular design of Japanese bento boxes, giving way to clearly defined sections that seamlessly fit together for optimum flow and functionality, making it a unique design. Entry-level Studios are furnished with king-size beds and come outfitted with 4K TVs (equipped with Apple TV 4K), rain showers and plush bath linens from Imabari while each Suite and Corner Studio also come with a soaking tub and can be combined with an adjoining Studio to create a two-bedroom unit.

For dining, it is hosted by UPSTAIRZ, the hotel’s all-day dining venue. The 116-seat, 2,690-square-foot eatery encompasses a covered outdoor terrace. The atmosphere of the restaurant varies as the sun goes down, you can spend a leisurely afternoon tea time here, and come back for a relaxing night with your friends and a few drinks by the bar.

The Executive Chef of UPSTAIRZ – Shinya Otsuchihashi, who has conceived all of the menus, focuses on local, seasonal ingredients. He honed his skills in both France and Japan before taking the helm at the Michelin-starred CRAFTALE restaurant in Tokyo. With his exquisite culinary skills, guests are guaranteed a spectacular dining experience.

From then till now, bento remains serving as a “tool” to connect people, delivering the love behind the delicacies prepared. Through a humanised design – each guestroom’s layout that draws inspiration from the modular design of Japanese bento boxes, Zentis Osaka enhances the living experience of guests and continues to raise the bar on select-service hospitality.

BANGKOK IN ULTRA LUXURY MINIATURE

In every corner of the hotel, there is a strong statement of her interior design.

Let us press our hands together. ‘Wai’ is the famous Thai gesture of hands pressed together – as simple as praying hands – in greeting. Upon marrying with this traditional greeting with contemporary design, we are welcomed to Rosewood Bangkok, the striking new landmark in Bangkok.

Rosewood Bangkok is a 30-storey standalone hotel nestled in the heart of the capital. It is presented by the team of Kohn Pederson Fox from New York with Tandem Architects from Thailand itself as the executive architects, and Celia Chu from Taiwan for the interior design of public areas and guest rooms.

Noticeably, Celia is the founder of Celia Chu Design & Associates (CCDA) – established since 2007 in Taiwan. Her masterpieces span across the globe, including Grand Hyatt Dalian, China; Hyatt Regency Danang, Vietnam; Grand Hyatt Fukuoka, Japan; Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Rosewood Bangkok, Thailand – her latest project among all.

Sophistication and layered richness are central to to her design flair in hospitality and residential projects where Rosewood Bangkok serves as a good illustration.

In every corner of the hotel, there is a strong statement of her interior design. Combining luxurious materials such as marble, metal and leather, with traditional materials such as wood carvings and textiles not only establishes a multi-layered and visually compelling stage set, but also delivers the most impactful translation of ultra-luxury.

The hotel is home to 159 guest rooms, including 34 suites and studios as well as 3 houses with private pools and terraces. With every small detail being considered, Celia skilfully utilises the colour scheme to incorporate dark and light areas to envision a residential feeling while echoing the overall design concept; even indulges travellers in full with copious books, art, accessories and decorations. Her blend of modern interior design sensibility and indigenous elements is reflected through tropical accents of rich woods and rattan-inspired patterns, weaves and panels, alongside the colour palette accentuated by bursts of turquoise blue and emerald green against a calming backdrop of white, cream, brown and gold tones.

Celia also designs other core parts of the hotel, including Sense Spa, Lakorn European Brasserie, the organic café G&O and the rooftop bar Lennon’s. Like every bar and restaurant in Thailand, those set within Rosewood Bangkok embrace their own uniqueness. When depicting Lakorn European Brasserie with inspiration from an antique musical box, Celia makes use of curved panels to create a sense of intimacy in the seating zone. A closer look at the metallic window mesh reveals Thai traditional dance ornaments reinterpreted as individual brass fingernails which are intricately woven into gleaming curtains; travellers are drawn to the beauty of Thai culture.

The Pavilion, on the other hand, is a purpose-built, high-end residentialstyle venue. Celia fuses old-world charm with new rustic applications, opts for magnificent decorations, then creates a luxurious interior that caters to different forms of exclusive events and functions.

Sense Spa is a dramatic addition to the hotel. Celia takes reference from the caves found in Thailand’s countryside which perfectly complement the authentic Thai experience. Its fibre glass walls shaped and painted by a local artist, shield travellers from the city’s hustle and bustle to enjoy a truly relaxing and rejuvenating stay.

Feeling sad to end the ultra-luxury living? Take a look at the modern metalwork sculpture – ‘wai’ spelled in the ancient Thai alphabet – curated by artist Jiandyin at the entryway, and we may realise getting this hotel back to our bucket list is the only way out.

CLOSEST TO HEAVEN

Influenced by the Asian philosophy and five traditional Chinese elements, Steve Leung employs the two classic elements water and wood into his design.

The spectacular spiraling skyscrapers twist and turn as they extend into the sky, soaring between heaven and earth like a fearless dragon. Situated between Kuala Lumpur City Centre and the bustling Golden Triangle neighbourhood, are the world’s tallest twisted twin residential towers – 8 Conlay. Scheduled to open by the end of 2020, there is no doubt that 8 Conlay will appeal to overseas buyers.

8 Conlay, the new Kuala Lumpur landmark, is an integrated development consisting of three towers atop a four-storey lifestyle retail podium, featuring the first and only five-star Kempinski Hotel in Malaysia and the world’s tallest twisted twin residential towers devoted exclusively to branded serviced residences called YOO8 serviced by Kempinski.

The building itself is designed by architect Hud Bakar (of RSP Architects) with landscapes by designer Pok Kobkongsanti (of TROP Studio). As for the branded serviced residences, YOO8 serviced by Kempinski (YOO8 Tower A and YOO8 B), the interior designs are done by two visionary design talents respectively – the award-winning Hong Kong-based architect Steve Leung and British celebrity interior designer Kelly Hoppen.

“When we created the design concept for YOO8 Tower A residences, we wanted to contribute a feeling of wellbeing to the environments that these two classic elements affect. We want to achieve an ideal balance between economics and aesthetics, to bring space to life and to create space for life.”
Hong Kong architect — Steve Leung

Designed by two world-class top design masters, YOO8 serviced by Kempinski has distinctive styles. Steve Leung designs the 61-storey YOO8 Tower A with 564 residences. Influenced by the Asian philosophy and five traditional Chinese elements, Steve employs the two classic elements water and wood into his design.

“When we created the design concept for YOO8 Tower A residences, we wanted to contribute a feeling of wellbeing to the environments that these two classic elements affect,” said Steve Leung. In fact, his ideology is evidenced in azure accents and lavish marbled surfaces, embodying the relaxing effect and elegance of flowing water, simultaneously echo the theme.

Another important aspect considered by Steve is the use of space. In order to maximize the flexibility of space, most of the residences contain open or semi-open kitchens and open-plan living-rooms. The combination of interactive living and dining room areas ensures that every inch of space is utilised.

On the other hand, Kelly Hoppen designs the 56-storey YOO8 Tower B with 498 residences. As a globally renowned interior designer, Kelly has designed homes for many high-profile celebrities and was honoured with a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009.

“By adding the Urban and Spring concepts, the residents are immediately welcomed into an environment reminiscent of home that is always worth treasuring.”
British celebrity interior designer — Kelly Hoppen

Designed by Kelly Hoppen, YOO8 Tower B is defined by two main design concepts: Urban and Spring. As a female, Kelly seamlessly combined a sophisticated ambience with designsavvy urbanities in the city, cleverly curated the Urban concept space with her classic style. Incorporating signature linear muted tones and repeated motifs in design, the space appeals to the inner cosmopolitan and timeless elegance at the same time. Regarding the Spring concept, Kelly brings harmony and a calm ambience by making best use of soft warm schemes in lighting, neutral materials and organic textures.

Kelly has designed homes for many high-profile celebrities and was honoured with a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009.

“It is my very honour to share my design philosophy for the 8 Conlay project,” said Kelly Hoppen. “By adding the Urban and Spring concepts, the residents are immediately welcomed into an environment reminiscent of home that is always worth treasuring.”

Overlooking the astonishing skyline of Kuala Lumpur from YOO8 serviced by Kempinski, you see yourself walking through the clouds where mists and fogs surround this enchanted forest of mystery island.

LIVE A LIFE OF ADVENTURE
– Katharine Pooley

Katharine Pooley takes pictures with family at the garden.

“Craftsmanship, hand finishing and personalization are the pillars of true luxury.”
Katharine Pooley, a renowned UK interior designer

Adventurer, as stated in Cambridge Dictionary, refers to a person who enjoys and looks for dangerous and exciting experiences. The word says it all about Katharine Pooley, one of the most sought-after interior designers in the United Kingdom. She loves travelling, exploring and infusing her design with all those experiences in creation of landmark commercial and residential properties around the globe.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You never know what each step will bring you. Admittedly a shrewd businesswoman in the finance industry, it comes as a big surprise to Katharine that she becomes one of the interior design influentials while being consistently featured in the Andrew Martin Top 100 international interior designers. So, what actually drives her to make the first step onto this adventurous journey as an interior designer?

Cachet Boutique Zhejiang Racetrack Circuit Hotel is one of her recent yet largest projects in China.

“I have a passion for collecting beautiful objects, even from a very young age.
The eye for design then stays with me through the years and I always love to put so much thoughts in my homes. My friends have once said that ‘This creative gift you have is wasted in finance!’ I barely listen until after many years working for Morgan Stanley and Barclays,
I decide to open a small boutique in London’s Knightsbridge, selling my one-and-only collections such as exquisite accessories, luxurious bespoke furniture and unique artworks found in my trips. Amazingly, word of mouth spreads thus this little boutique incredibly quickly grows to be one of the largest Design Studios in Europe, now possessing a team of 47 interior designers and architects. Surely when I look back at what has been achieved, I feel proud and blessed,” says Katharine, upon depicting her courage to cross the threshold of interior design industry.

That being said, Katharine is not only an interior designer but also a genuine adventurer, given that she has already travelled to more than 250 countries. If the world was a book, Katharine would almost be reading the last page.

The overall design concept is “masculine” but Katharine includes soft lighting and tactile fabrics, especially in the spa and bedroom suite areas, as a touch of femininity to strike a balance.

“I travel a lot and always return brimming with new ideas for interior design. For example, I create a cascading chandelier of thousands of porcelain gold edged leaves with inspiration from the abstract beauty of autumnal leaves in the wind I see so much of on a trip to North America. More literally, on a recent trip to Russia, a detail on the ceiling of the Sumer Palace of Peter the Great catches my eye and I later incorporate aspects of it into a new cornice design for a client’s villa,” Katharine vividly describes some of the memorable moments in travelling.

The true luxurious interior design is unique and unmatched. When you learn more about Katharine, you will realize that her design concepts in worldwide projects, which
are not limited to private homes in Moscow, luxury chalets in Italy as well as properties in France, Monaco and Mumbai, are never repetitive. She is also good at combining diversifying elements of an interior design that represents an exquisite, timeless British elegance. Feel monotonous about her design concepts? In no way!

Katharine continues, “when there is a new project, I love taking time to consider the architectural style and location as these have to work with the interior design not against it.

Along with insights into my client’s brief, personal values, taste and even the way in which they and their family live their lives are pivotal for me to piece together their ‘dream home or property’, then set to work with my team in realizing this dream for them.”

The Pearl Villa

Katharine’s recent highlight lies on China’s Cachet Boutique Zhejiang Racetrack Circuit Hotel, which is also her largest project in the country. Influenced by the racetrack location
of the hotel, precision engineering and the client’s passion for luxury car design, Katharine creates an interior that reflects the prestigious world of motorsport and luxe supercar finishes to mirror the hotel concept. The materials encompass high-quality embossed leathers, a range of sleek engineered metals reminiscent of luxury cars, exquisite slab marble, metal resins and sumptuous textiles. The design brings together contemporary indulgence with the comfort and atmosphere of an elegant European hotel.

“The overall feeling is ‘masculine’ but I include soft lighting and tactile fabrics, especially in the spa and bedroom suite areas, as a touch of femininity to strike a balance,” Katharine explains on the design concept of Cachet Boutique Zhejiang Racetrack Circuit Hotel.

The Clarence at St James House

Being awarded for many international interior designs, Katharine believes that “craftmanship, hand finishing and personalization” is yet the future pillars of true luxury.

The “Adventure World” of Katharine is full of wow factors. Every factor she incorporates in her designs creates talking points, incredible chandeliers, impressive light installations, beautiful smelling flowers – you name it. This is why there is a loyal international fan base for her journey as an interior designer.
