BANGKOK IN ULTRA LUXURY MINIATURE
In every corner of the hotel, there is a strong statement of her interior design.
Let us press our hands together. ‘Wai’ is the famous Thai gesture of hands pressed together – as simple as praying hands – in greeting. Upon marrying with this traditional greeting with contemporary design, we are welcomed to Rosewood Bangkok, the striking new landmark in Bangkok.
Rosewood Bangkok is a 30-storey standalone hotel nestled in the heart of the capital. It is presented by the team of Kohn Pederson Fox from New York with Tandem Architects from Thailand itself as the executive architects, and Celia Chu from Taiwan for the interior design of public areas and guest rooms.
Noticeably, Celia is the founder of Celia Chu Design & Associates (CCDA) – established since 2007 in Taiwan. Her masterpieces span across the globe, including Grand Hyatt Dalian, China; Hyatt Regency Danang, Vietnam; Grand Hyatt Fukuoka, Japan; Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Rosewood Bangkok, Thailand – her latest project among all.
Sophistication and layered richness are central to to her design flair in hospitality and residential projects where Rosewood Bangkok serves as a good illustration.
In every corner of the hotel, there is a strong statement of her interior design. Combining luxurious materials such as marble, metal and leather, with traditional materials such as wood carvings and textiles not only establishes a multi-layered and visually compelling stage set, but also delivers the most impactful translation of ultra-luxury.
The hotel is home to 159 guest rooms, including 34 suites and studios as well as 3 houses with private pools and terraces. With every small detail being considered, Celia skilfully utilises the colour scheme to incorporate dark and light areas to envision a residential feeling while echoing the overall design concept; even indulges travellers in full with copious books, art, accessories and decorations. Her blend of modern interior design sensibility and indigenous elements is reflected through tropical accents of rich woods and rattan-inspired patterns, weaves and panels, alongside the colour palette accentuated by bursts of turquoise blue and emerald green against a calming backdrop of white, cream, brown and gold tones.
Celia also designs other core parts of the hotel, including Sense Spa, Lakorn European Brasserie, the organic café G&O and the rooftop bar Lennon’s. Like every bar and restaurant in Thailand, those set within Rosewood Bangkok embrace their own uniqueness. When depicting Lakorn European Brasserie with inspiration from an antique musical box, Celia makes use of curved panels to create a sense of intimacy in the seating zone. A closer look at the metallic window mesh reveals Thai traditional dance ornaments reinterpreted as individual brass fingernails which are intricately woven into gleaming curtains; travellers are drawn to the beauty of Thai culture.
The Pavilion, on the other hand, is a purpose-built, high-end residentialstyle venue. Celia fuses old-world charm with new rustic applications, opts for magnificent decorations, then creates a luxurious interior that caters to different forms of exclusive events and functions.
Sense Spa is a dramatic addition to the hotel. Celia takes reference from the caves found in Thailand’s countryside which perfectly complement the authentic Thai experience. Its fibre glass walls shaped and painted by a local artist, shield travellers from the city’s hustle and bustle to enjoy a truly relaxing and rejuvenating stay.
Feeling sad to end the ultra-luxury living? Take a look at the modern metalwork sculpture – ‘wai’ spelled in the ancient Thai alphabet – curated by artist Jiandyin at the entryway, and we may realise getting this hotel back to our bucket list is the only way out.
