FINDING BLISS IN OLD-WORLD CHARM

Stepped into the restored ‘ryokan’, you will find a long corridor designed to evoke Kyoto’s alleyways.

With a remarkable history stretching back a thousand years, Kyoto–the ancient capital of Japan–is a mix of traditions, art and culture. For those visiting Kansai, Japan, you must also see Kyoto. Picture yourself standing atop the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and enjoy majestic views of the city, then take a slow stroll along Hanami-koji to get a taste of the times in Heian Period, or pay a visit to the mesmerizing Bamboo Grove in Arashiyama.

Famous for its masterpieces of Japanese architecture, Kyoto is full of quaint and traditional buildings. Recently settled in Kyoto’s Gion district, the Sowaka hotel is an elegantly restored ‘ryokan’ that combines traditional Kyotostyle and modern city life. The hotel’s main building was originally an old established restaurant built in the 20th century. The renovated building effuses ethereal elegance in its luxurious space combining nostalgia with modernity.

Sowaka is a Sanskrit word meaning “happiness” or “wellbeing.” You are instantly transported to an oasis of calm the moment you set foot in the hotel, luring you into a tranquil, peaceful, Japanese-style open space.

You are instantly transported to an oasis of calm the moment you set foot in the hotel, luring you into a tranquil, peaceful, Japanese-style open space.

Sowaka’s guestrooms and suites are discreetly arranged among green courtyards, with long corridors designed to evoke Kyoto’s alleyways. Traditional ryokan elements such as paper sliding doors and tea ceremony rooms are interwoven with modern comforts, bringing you an authentic Kyoto experience.

Meticulously decorated with selected furniture, fixtures and amenities, every considered detail at the guestrooms showcases local customs: cedar wood speakers, and cushioned, cashmere mattresses, bath amenities made with Japanese camelia oil from Kazurasei Shinise, a long-established skin care and hair care brand in Kyoto; while the hotel’s water is drawn from its own underground spring.

There is also a Michelin-starred restaurant next door. The award-winning Tokyo restaurant La BOMBANCE Gion offers exquisite, traditional Japanese cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests can also sample a curated selection of the finest Japanese whisky, sake and shochu at the on-site bar.

At Sowaka, the ancient streets and charming neighborhoods of Kyoto are on your doorstep. With private tours available to escape the crowds, guests are provided with specially tailored tours to experience Kyoto’s captivating history, exquisite craftsmanship and fascinating cultures.

Imagine taking a morning stroll among cherry blossom in the spring and sampling a tea ceremony in Kodaiji Temple; or going to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kiyomizudera Temple for the breathtaking view of the sun rising over the city’s rooftops. You might also run into a legendary maiko as you wander along the beautiful streets of Hanamikoji and Yasaka.

01 The spacious Hollywood suite covers a total area of 97 square meters, interweaves traditional Kyoto-style with modern comforts.

02 After exploring the unique attractions of Kyoto, the best way to unwind is soaking in the hot spring at the hotel.

03 The Naguri wall deluxe double twin room in the main building is a perfect combination of traditional Kyoto charms and exquisite local craftsmanship.

The Japanese garden located at the center of the hotel takes you back to the times in Heian Period.

The deluxe twin room in the main building is a Japanese-style maisonnette with a private garden, bringing elegance and serenity.

CONQUEROR OF THE AIR

The G700 has a high-standard cabin that offers 100 percent fresh air.

Rolls-Royce, the very best luxury automobile maker in the world, recently set foot in engine manufacturing for business aviation, while continuing to make top class limousines. In joining hands with Gulfstream Aerospace, two Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines have powered the new Gulfstream G700 and completed its first flight in two hours and 32 minutes this February.

“The Gulfstream G700 takes the very best elements from our most innovative products and unites them with cutting-edge advances to create an all-new, advanced-technology aircraft that redefines safety, comfort and range at speed. This announcement is the biggest news in business aviation history,” said Gulfstream CEO Mark Burns.

“The Gulfstream G700 redef ines safety, comfort and range at speed, making it the biggest news in business aviation history.”
Mark Burns, Gulfstream CEO

The Gulfstream G700 is the largest aircraft ever built by the General Dynamics subsidiary with its wingspan of 31.39 m. It can fly at its high-speed cruise of 1,074 km/h for 11,853 km or at its long-range cruise of 1,015 km/h for 13,890 km, which boasts the longest range at the fastest speeds in the industry.

The two Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines that powered the G700 generated 18,250 lb of thrust with its 131.6cm bladed disk fan that combines the company’s Advance2 engine core with a brand-new low-pressure system for greater efficiency.

In addition to electronically linked active control sidesticks and the most extensive use of touchscreen technology in business aviation, the Flight Deck is also equipped with Gulfstream’s Predictive Landing Performance System that gives pilots advanced warning of potential runway excursions so that they can adjust approaches or go around.

Boasting the tallest, widest and longest cabin in the industry, the all-new cabin on the G700 has up to five living areas, offering an extra-large ultragalley with a passenger lounge or crew compartment; a six-place dining or conference room; and a master suite with shower. Equipped with twenty panoramic oval windows, it allows passengers to enjoy the best flight experience.

Mark Burns also pointed out that while the G700 meets customer needs, it also offers unlimited possibilities. “Gulfstream has a long tradition of listening to our customers, and the G700 cabin is the evolution of that collaboration,” said Burns. “Customers shared how much they value flexibility and comfort in the cabin, all without compromising the speed and range advantages they have come to expect from Gulfstream.”

The G700 also offers a range of cabin amenities that revolutionise the benefits of businessjet travel, including the most advanced circadian lighting system in aviation. The Gulfstream cabin recreates sunrise and sunset through thousands of white and amber LEDs, gently coaxing passengers into their new time zone and greatly reducing the physical impact of travelling halfway around the world.

LAMBORGHINI ON WATER

The cockpit features the iconic honeycomb motif, with similar styling as the super sports car’s instrument panel and steering wheel.

Provoked by the launch of superboats from numerous luxury automobile brands such as Aston Martin, Porsche and Lexus, Italian Automobili Lamborghini has finally decided to join the sailing club. Recently, Lamborghini has collaborated with The Italian Sea Group to present a new motor yacht – the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63, drawing inspiration from the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. A limited edition will be available for purchase as of early 2021.

As the Tecnomar fleet’s new motor yacht, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht is named in reference to Lamborghini’s 1963 foundation. Its inspiration comes from the Sián FKP 37, a futuristic hybrid super sports car incorporating new supercapacitor and materials science technologies, with a stylish design and fully customisable colour and details. Thanks to the distinct design unique to shared Italian style and tradition, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 combines performance, driving pleasure, as well as attention to quality and details.

The yacht’s sports seats are finished in Lamborghini’s Carbon Skin™.

“This yacht allows the essence of both organisations’ style and expertise to be transferred to different worlds. If I had to imagine a Lamborghini on water, this would be my vision,” said Stefano Domenicali, Chairman of Lamborghini.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, believes this motor yacht will become a futuristic icon as the car it is inspired by. He added: “I’m proud that we have chosen to create this innovative and challenging project with Automobili Lamborghini, which links technology, supreme design, quality and performance.”

The exterior design of the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht is characterised by a sportive silhouette and a cutting-edge nautical appearance. Both the hull and the superstructure are created from a high-performance shell, developed by naval engineers specialising in hydrodynamic sciences. The hard top is inspired by Lamborghini roadsters: providing sun and wind protection while guaranteeing an outstanding aerodynamic performance.

The yacht’s instrument panel also interprets the car cockpit in a nautical style, integrating all navigation and control systems. As in Lamborghini super sports cars, details are finished in carbon fibre, with Lamborghini’s Carbon Skin™ used in the sports seats and on the helm, styled as the super sports car’s steering wheel.

Utilising carbon fibre and lightweight materials, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht only weights 24 tons per 63 feet long. With two MAN V12-2000 hp engines, the motor yacht reaches 60 knots (111km/h), making it the fastest Tecnomar fleet, meeting the needs of both collectors and sailing enthusiasts.

The hard top is inspired by Lamborghini roadsters, providing sun and wind protection.

Lamborghini’s iconic clean lines, hexagon shapes, Y-motif and materials are clearly incorporated into the design.

THE AGE OF ELECTRIC DRIVE

The long awaited Porsche Taycan, Porsche’s first electric car, has finally arrived in Hong Kong, with the debut of its flagship Turbo S version.

The Taycan links our heritage to the future. It carries forward the success story of our brand.
Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG

Sustainability and environmental protection are key focuses of today’s society, including the automotive industry. When speaking of electric cars, one would naturally think of the American Tesla, yet its status will soon be challenged by the debut of the new Porsche Taycan – Porsche’s first electric sports car after 5 years of development.

Having established its status in the sport s-car hall of fame, Porsche has been developing the Mission E electric concept car since 2015. After a long wait, Porsche finally debuted its first fully-electric sports car – the Porsche Taycan last September, which arrived in Hong Kong last month. “This day marks the start of a new era,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, who opened the world premiere in Berlin.

The four-door sports saloon is a unique package with a Turkic name – Taycan: meaning “soul of a spirited young horse”, which also represents the horse on the Porsche crest. “We promised a true Porsche for the age of electromobility – a fascinating sports car that not only excites in terms of its technology and driving dynamics, but also sparks a passion in people all over the world, just like its legendary predecessors have done. Now we are delivering on this promise,” emphasises Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG – Research and Development.

The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo. They are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the most powerful production models that the sports car manufacturer currently has in its product range, while the new entrylevel Taycan 4S will follow shortly.

Marking the beginning of a new era, the Taycan retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA at the same time. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings, with a silhouette sloping downward to the rear. The sleek cabin, the drawnin rear C-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. There are also innovative elements such as the 4-point LED Matrix System headlights, contributing to a dynamic design.

As usual, the cockpit of Taycan has a low ground clearance that adds to the aerodynamics of the car, yet ensures sitting comfort in the rear with a surprisingly wide legroom. The panoramic glass sunroof above makes the Taycan feel like a mini-SUV. The freestanding, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard, placing a clear focus on the driver axis. A central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look, adding a science fiction twist.

The number of classic hardware controls such as switches and buttons has been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function, which responds to the command “Hey Porsche”, making the Taycan more digitalised and state-of-the-art.

What gives the Taycan a cutting edge is that it is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. The Taycan also stands out for its advanced fast charging capabilities. The charging time for five to 80 percent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes for charging under ideal conditions, and 8 hours under level 2 charging conditions.

Equipped with the 93.4 kWh high-performance battery, both the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo are all-wheel drive. The flagship Turbo S version can generate up to 761 PS, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds; while the Taycan Turbo can generate up to 680 PS and complete this sprint in 3.2 seconds. The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h. With an improved range and continuous power of the drive, the Turbo S has a range of up to 412 kilometres, and the Turbo a range of up to 450 kilometres.

The Taycan 4S, which will be launched shortly, has two battery sizes. The 79.2 kWh standard battery can generate up to 530 PS; while the 93.4 kWh upgraded high-performance battery can generate up to 571 PS. Both batteries can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds, with a top speed of up to 250 km/h, and a range of up to 463 kilometers.

01 Using touch operation for passenger screen display makes the Taycan more digitalised.   02 With the Taycan, Porsche offers an entirely leather-free interior for the first time and adapts the natural tanned Club Leather “OLEA”, enforcing the sustainability concept in electric sports cars.

NATURE IS HOME

The Chinese restaurant Green House is a verdant oasis with exotic collection of plants, enhancing the ambience with the vivid beauty of nature.

Inspired by the rugged, raw beauty of Hainan Island, nature is home at Haitang Bay; let us simply relax in this untouched natural landscape.

Nature is never separate from humans. Picture yourself in a paradise-like resort enjoying the tranquil, primitive beauty of Mother Earth, what will you do to give back to this unconditional love?

As a forerunner of sustainable hospitality and green innovations, 1 Hotels made its Asia debut on Hainan island’s beautiful shoreline – 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, Sanya. Inspired by the rugged, raw beauty of the Hainan Island, this ecoconscious luxury lifestyle hotel made good use of the area’s rich resources. You will find peace in this sanctuary when dappled light filtering in through leaf-sheltered skylights to stacks of salvaged Chinese roof tiles, echoing with coastal cliff faces.

“Our inspiration for the 1 Hotel Haitang Bay project is deeply rooted in the vision of the 1 Hotels brand, which aspires to be a relaxed, comfortable, natural and open environment for travellers,” explains Dr. Lin Hao, company director and project leader of The Oval Partnership. This architecture, designed by strategic planners Oval Partnership, combines locally sourced natural materials, such as lava stone and red cedar, with innovative green technologies.

Stepping into the hotel, I was immediately surrounded by lush gardens and native greenery, encapsulating the biodiversity of the area’s local species and natural surroundings. A lush mangrove tree courtyard offers a tranquil retreat, while living green walls planted with local vegetation, such as ficus pumila and ferns, flourish across staggered roof terraces and semi-open courtyards. Let us simply relax in this untouched natural landscape.

The contemporary, minimalist design of guestrooms features the island’s natural textures of unpolished natural stones and woods.

The interior design is managed by Singapore-based senior designer Nina Arily, paying tribute to nature. “We were taken by Sanya’s raw nature of fertile volcanic plains, green forested hills, sandy beaches and sparkling waters. We wanted the interiors to capture the textures, diversity and spirit of the island,” says Nina Arily.

To bring nature inside, the contemporary, minimalist design of guestrooms features the island’s natural textures of unpolished natural stones and woods, creating harmonious colour tones through an abundance of natural furnishings, including stools made of tree stumps, live-edge timber desks, rattan rugs, bespoke artworks made from sun-bleached driftwood, and organic cotton upholstery, capturing the beauty of nature inside and out.

For food and beverage, the hotel boasts 7 outlets, including handcrafted noodle restaurant Noodle House; oceanfront lobby lounge Drift; relaxing pool-side bar The Sandbox; and The Juice Bar. Incorporating reclaimed timber and steel from old fishing boats and other natural textures, these refined outlets mirror the island’s natural wonder.

01 There are 294 guestrooms, including suites and villas, ranging from 62 square-meters to 1,300 square-meters.   02 Oceanfront guestrooms can enjoy stunning views of Haitang Bay, facing the sandy beach and crystal-clear waters of the ocean.

The hotel’s signature all-day dining concept 1 Kitchen features a rammed earth wall that evokes imagery of rocky coastline, complementing its use of natural and organic ingredients. While the Chinese restaurant Green House is a verdant oasis, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow sunlight to stream through and bring life to an exotic collection of edible plants, hanging ferns, palms, and orchids. Just a 10-minute ride from the hotel, there is an off-site farm that showcases Hainan’s seasonal produce, providing fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, bringing the farm-to-table concept alive.

To cultivate the best of its sustainable design, the hotel reduces carbon emissions to a minimum. Alongside using reclaimed and locally sourced materials, green technologies are also designed, including solar thermal hot water and rainwater recycling for garden and landscape irrigation. Skylights and clerestory windows allow daylight to be used over artificial light wherever possible, integrating the concept of environmental protection into every part of the hotel.

The hotel has five outdoor swimming pools of a total area of 3,500 square meters, including the Family Pool, Children Pool, Sky Pool-opening soon, Lagoon Plunge Pool and Adult Pool-opening soon.

REIMAGINE YOUR EXTRAVAGANT DREAM TOUR

There are only 48 custom handcrafted seats on board, designed by Optimares, an Italian seatmanufacturing company, all outfitted in Poltrona Frau leather from Italy.

The Four Seasons private jet experience provides diversified and personalised services on board, from a chef and mixologist to a round-the-clock doctor and concierge.

Traveling around the world is a dream for many. Imagine taking a private jet, staying in a five-star hotel and savouring Michelin star dining, now could be the time to realize this extravagant dream and adore the glamour of air travel.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, the world’s leading luxury hospitality company, debuted its first fully branded and customised private jet in 2015. Since then, the Four Seasons Private Jet experience has transported hundreds of guests on bespoke journeys around the world and recently unveiled plans for an all-new Four Seasons Private Jet, the A321LR aircraft, that will take flight in early 2021.

The new A321LR aircraft, part of the new Airbus NEO family, will replace Four Seasons’ current Boeing 757-200 ER, becoming the hotel industry’s first-ever fully branded and customised private jet.

Luxury, naturally, is in the details, and no element of the new A321 has been overlooked. “When designing the new Four Seasons Private Jet, we were inspired by the glamour and prestige of air travel in times past, when every flight was a special occasion. With a laser focus on comfort and functionality, our aim is to create an environment that encourages spontaneous social interaction between everyone on board, reinforcing the power of connection.” says Dana Kalczak, Four Seasons Vice President, Design.

The curvaceous design of the fuselage has inspired Dana Kalczak and her team to make a human-centric design, thoughtfully accommodating the human body and its comfort.

The new jet, the widest and tallest cabin in its class, was conceived with a focus on well-being. With custom designed handcrafted seats, seating capacity has been reduced from 52 to 48, allowing for an expanded gathering place where guests can mingle and interact freely.

The cabin accents an elegant combination of a cream and chocolate colour palette. Besides commissioning a bespoke carpet, the design team has coined “La Ville Rose”, in honor of the distinctive peachy-rose color of the old buildings of Toulouse, for the aircraft’s cashmere throws and pillows. Curtains are in a lovely ombré that transitions from cream to rose, and even the nylon for the seat belts was chosen for its specific luster and color, displaying an exquisite design and craftsmanship.

With every detail under consideration in Four Seasons, lavatories are also being expanded for added comfort and flexibility, reflecting a more residential style. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and learn from Four Seasons master chefs and mixologists, wellness experts and arts and culture aficionados for an enriching in-flight experience. The Executive Chef will also enjoy an expanded galley area in which to prepare menus that are inspired by the journey itself, with the opportunity for spur-of-the-moment culinary surprises along the way.

The executive chef, concierge, director of guest experience, physician, and in-flight crew are all Four Seasons-trained, ensuring an elevated and highly personal experience that guests have come to expect from Four Seasons.

The President of Four Seasons Worldwide Hotel Operations hopes to create an intimate and comfortable experience that integrates a social and residential dimension on board.

DBX offers many optional accessory packages, such as the Pet package that includes a portable washer and the Snow package that delivers boot warmers.

“To have produced such a beautiful, hand built, yet technologically advanced car is a proud moment for Aston Martin.”
— Dr. Andy Palme,  Aston Martin Lagonda President & Group CEO

From a century of serving, Aston Martin has debuted its first SUV, marking a bold new chapter and a landmark moment in Aston Martin’s illustrious 106-year history. The DBX SUV was created based on the DBX concept car released in 2015, with prototype test work beginning in Wales in the end of 2018.

Aston Martin Lagonda President & Group CEO, Dr. Andy Palmer said: “I can’t emphasise enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Martin, a British iconic brand. DBX also marks a key moment in the delivery of the third and final phase of our Second Century Plan, moving our second manufacturing facility in St Athan, Wales, into mass production.”

Utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method Aston Martin has refined through the development of its GT sports cars, the body structure of DBX is both incredibly light and stiff, assisting in the delivery of an overall kerbweight of 2,245kg. The adaptive triple chamber air springs enable variable spring stiffness, giving both luxurious comfort and dynamic prowess.

DBX transports up to five occupants, offering a fantastically light and spacious cabin environment with class-leading headroom and legroom combined with a full-length glass panoramic roof and frameless door glass.

The latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) – capable of 1,400Nm of anti-roll force per axle – can limit DBX’s body roll for handling that is much more akin to that of a sports car than an SUV. With its capacity to raise the ride height by 45mm or lower it by 50mm the air suspension gives any driver the confidence to tackle a wide range of terrain.

In terms of performance, DBX features an impressive output of 550PS and 700NM of torque, powered by a new version of the characterful 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With cylinder deactivation to enhance fuel economy, it can also propel DBX from 0 to 100kmph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 291kmph.

With a distinctive sound character that is unquestionably Aston Martin, the active exhaust system ensures both refinement and exhilaration. Equipped with a nine-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, DBX is allied to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials featuring an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff).

Designed to allow maximum room in the cabin, DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space, putting a premium on class-leading spacious headroom and legroom for both front and rear occupants, providing the driver with long-distance driving comfort.

With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats, it maximises the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment.

Another design highlight includes the bridged centre console allowing for both flexible storage below. Framed by these materials is an abundance of technology. A 10.25” TFT screen sits elegantly flush in the centre console, while a huge 12.3” TFT screen provides a wealth of information to the driver. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, as does a 360-degree camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64 different colours in two zones.

From the signature ‘DB’ grille at the front, through to the sculptured sides and design feature line, to the tailgate with a flip that draws inspiration from Vantage, this is an Aston Martin from first glance to detailed inspection. Beautiful details like the hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors and glass B-pillar finishers add an elegant sleekness and confidence to the stance.

For those who want to own the first SUV in the history of Aston Martin, the first 500 owners will benefit from an exclusive ‘1913 Package’, including a unique fender badge, sill plaques and an inspection plaque detailing its limited build-run, complementing this classy landmark model.

The daytime running lights have an integrated aerodynamic duct, which channels air through the front wheel arches and along the side, helping to reduce both drag and lift while also cooling the brakes.

Adaptive air suspension has been combined with an electric anti-roll control system and electronic adaptive dampers to provide the new SUV with a huge breadth of ability.
