BORN IN PURPLE
“We can find much common ground between whisky making and colour creation and with Edition No.5 we have been able toSarah Burgess, The Macallan Whisky Maker
explore and celebrate these two art forms. “
Purple is traditionally seen as the last shade of a rainbow, but this shade is so compelling that no one can take their eyes off it. Incorporating elements of romance and elegance, it fulfills a role all
of its own. It is just as much about perfecting a rainbow formation as it is about enriching whisky making.
This comes as no surprise that the world renowned colour masters at the Pantone Color InstituteTM have personalised The Macallan Edition No.5 with a uniquely bold shade of purple, bringing to life the exquisite combination of red and blue in its whisky making.
“As the rainbow’s most complex colour, purple naturally felt like the ideal shade to highlight the equally complex process involved in The Macallan’s whisky making,” Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color InstituteTM says.
The bottling code <C5.V525.T20.2019-005> of The Macallan Edition No.5 actually unveils the complex process of its whisky making – <C5> is the use of 5 different cask types; <V525> is the marrying of 525 casks in whisky making; <T20> is the whisky colour code; <2019> is
the bottling year; and <005> is the series number of The Macallan Edition. Only with this precision, can the natural hues of The Macallan be reflected.
Make no mistake, sunlit barley best describes the special final colour of The Macallan Edition No.5 which one can enjoy with an intense flavour profile of sweet caramel and fresh fruits combined with oak spices. A second sip even elevates the sweetness with a striking balance of poached peaches and ripe pear, followed by hints of nutmeg and ginger.
Winter in Hong Kong is sometimes filled with chilly rain, but I can nevertheless go chase rainbows with the world renowned colour masters and depict my glass of whisky with seducing purple. I indulge in more than one drink, leaving my last sip of rainbows until the days end.
